Cambodian and Thai Border Residents Begin Returning Home as Conflict Eases

Phnom Penh: Following the successful conclusion of an extraordinary meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, residents from both nations who live along the border are starting to return to their homes. The improved situation comes after the two countries agreed on a 13-point plan on August 7, 2025.

Cambodians residing along the border, particularly in the provinces of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey, as well as Thai citizens in border areas, began their gradual return on August 8, 2025.

The GBC meeting, co-chaired by Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, General Tea Seiha, and Thailand's Acting Minister of Defence, General Nattaphon Narkphanit, was held to de-escalate recent tensions. The successful talks resulted in a commitment to a ceasefire and a series of measures aimed at restoring peace and stability. Key points of the agreement include ceasing all hostilities, halting troop reinforcements and movements, and ensuring the safety of civilians. The agreement also allows for an interim team of ASEAN observers to monitor the disputed areas.

The conflict had led to the displacement of a significant number of people on both sides of the border. The new agreement has been welcomed as a crucial step towards de-escalating tensions and allowing life to return to normal for the border communities.
