Donald Trump Announces Imminent
Meeting with Vladimir Putin
Washington D.C. - U.S.
President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday, August 6th, that he may soon
meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This statement followed what he
described as a fruitful discussion in Moscow between his special envoy and the
Russian leader. The news was reported by the AFP news agency.
Trump's announcement came after a
telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. When asked
about the timing of a potential meeting with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine,
Trump stated, "There's a very good chance that there will be a meeting
very soon." While he did not provide specific details about the location
of a meeting with Putin, if it were to happen, it would be the first summit
between the two leaders since President Joe Biden met with Putin in Geneva,
Switzerland, in June 2021.
American news outlets, the New York Times and CNN, also reported, based on sources from U.S. officials, that Trump plans to sit down for discussions with Putin, possibly as early as next week. Following that, the U.S. President reportedly wants to organize a trilateral meeting with both Putin and Zelenskyy. Trump has set a deadline of August 8th for Putin to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine, threatening severe sanctions against Russia if the deadline is not met.
